What we found under the carpet...

Convincing my dad to remove some of the larger pieces in Lenny was no easy task. As of right now, the cabinet behind the banquet, the storage above the banquet and one of the cabinets above the right bed have been removed. Hit your head on those upper cabinets a couple times and you would want them removed too.

Removing the cabinet behind the banquet really helped open up the space. Thinking this will eventually be a great nook for a chair.

One of the other pieces we removed in order to pull up the carpet was the bedside table. This may go back or we may add a new night stand, but thank goodness we removed this! Once that piece was removed we found quite the mess. There was water damage under the bedside table and all along the back under the beds causing the floor to rot and soaking wet insulation underneath. Since it was later in the evening after a long first day of demo, we covered the damage with a board for the time being until we could do some further investigating. After removing the rest of the carpet on day two of demo, we then realized the damage was much worse than we first expected.

Taaah dah!

Once my dad pulled up more of the rot this is what we were left with.

After a lot of thought this is what Dad finally decided to do. He first cut out cardboard stencils of the floor shape to get the approximate size needed. This was then transferred to plywood and then finally Starboard (high density polyethylene). According to my dad, the total sub floor thickness is 3/4", so he used a sheet of 1/2" and a sheet of 1/4" to make up the total thickness.

Here was the final result. Little sneak peak of the painted walls, surprise, we went white! Made SUCH a big difference! Can't wait to share more pictures of the painted walls. Stay tuned.

After much investigation and many rain storms later we finally found the main culprit of the leak. The caulking at the back needed to be replaced and multiple rivets had come loose. This is normal upkeep and something that needs to be replaced every once in a while but apparently hadn't been done in a very long time. We used Sikaflex-221

We found the same type of rot by the front door so the same process was done here.
